ESSEC (École Supérieure des Sciences Économiques et Commerciales) is one of the foremost business schools and Grandes Écoles in France and one of Europe’s top business schools. It was created by Jesuits in 1907 and was originally located in the heart of Paris, next to the University of Paris II: Panthéon-Assas, rue d'Assas. Its campus was later relocated to Cergy-Pontoise, 30 km west of Paris (Val d'Oise), in 1973.

As well as other top French Grandes Écoles, ESSEC is known for its very competitive entrance exams. The school, reputed for its international orientation, has partnerships with the best universities all over the world, such as Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Northwestern University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Chicago, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Seoul National University[1], and University of Peking.[2] In addition, a campus was established in Singapore in 2006.

ESSEC has among its notable alumni many CEOs of French and international companies, including Managing Director of Goldman Sachs Jean-Luc Biamonti, CEO of Accenture Pierre Nanterme or Europe CEO of Coca-Cola Dominique Reiniche.

Programs

Master of Science in Management

ESSEC's flagship postgraduate programme is its Master of Science in Management, designed for students with no professional experience (instead of managers with 3–5 years of experience like US or UK MBA programs). The diploma is only delivered upon completion of a required amount of time spent in internships.

Admission process

Along with HEC Paris, ESSEC is one of the two top schools among the Business Grandes écoles, and as such it requires passing a selective entrance examination, the "Concours Grandes Ecoles".

It takes place between May and June. Every year, ESSEC recruits about 360 students through this examination process. Most of the students who sit for the entrance examination come from the French “classes préparatoires”, also called “classes prépa”. The “classes préparatoires” last two years and their only purpose is to prepare students for the French Business Schools’ selective entrance examination.

ESSEC, along with many other business schools, tests the candidates on their knowledge in mathematics, economics, history, philosophy, general culture and languages. The candidates must also pass a series of oral exams in order to enter the school.

Admissions to ESSEC Grande École after a 'classe préparatoire'
Year Candidates Number of places offered Rank of the last admitted student Selectivity rate Yield
2011 5001 365 687 13.74% 53.13%
2010 4731 365 674 14.25% 54.15%
2009 4721 365 689 14.59% 52.98%

Many students in "classes préparatoires" choose not to pass the ESSEC exam because they consider it is too difficult, as the selectivity rate is rather low (less than 15%). There are approximately 16,000 undergraduate students who follow this academic training known as "prépa économiques et commerciales".
